
T. Sundararaman was a professor of medicine in JIPMER, Puducherry (from 1984 to 2002), before he shifted to working full time with health systems strengthening and health policy. From 2002 to 2007 he worked as the director of the State Health Resource Centre, Chhattisgarh, and then as the executive director of the National Health Systems Resource Centre for 7 years. He then taught public health and health systems in CSMCH in JNU for one year and then served as professor and dean of the School of Health Systems Studies at TISS Mumbai for 4 years (2015 to 2019).
From November 2019 to January 2022 he was Global Coordinator of Peoples Health Movement and he continued as a member of its Global Coordination Committee till February 2026.
He has a number of publications, both books and journal articles in the field of health systems and health policy. All along he has also contributed both to peoples science movements and peoples Health Movements, as a founder and one of its convenors. Now resident in Pondicherry, he also serves as advisor for the Pondicherry Science Forum, one of the state level peoples science movements which was initiated by him 41 years back.
Currently, he is an independent consultant and an adjunct faculty in the JIPMER International School of Public Health.
